Portraits of Faith Workshop

Seeing the Other: Sacred Listening & Portraits

The Sacred Listening Workshop was inspired by the Portraits in Faith multi-media documentary project. For 20 years, its creator, Daniel Epstein, has interviewed 500 people in 27 countries about their spiritual journeys and then has made a black and white portrait of each person meant to evoke their true spirit. For 10 years the project has been published online with 480,000 views on YouTube and 4000 active followers who receive new portraits when published. In 2022, Gina Alicea conceived of an exhibit and educational curriculum under the title “Seeing The Other” for the University of Chicago K-12 Laboratory Schools.

When Daniel first began the project, he thought it was about everyone getting to share their story. Then a friend sent him the book written by Story Corp founder, David Isay, entitled “Listening Is An Act of Love” and Daniel realized this project was about listening not telling, especially listening to the story of someone he perceived initially to be “the other.” Today he calls that “Sacred Listening” and Daniel creates experiences for people to receive each others’ sacred stories.
