CREATE MEANINGFUL MIDRASH THROUGH ART

Temple Har Shalom is proud to offer you this special opportunity to make something meaningful while “being immersed in a fusion of Jewish scholarship and creative expression.”
This weekend is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest.

We will be welcoming husband-and-wife team Isaac & Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik for as our Artists-in-Residence the weekend of February 9th – 11th. Over the weekend, they will be engaging us in several hands-on learning programs.

No experience or “artistic ability” is required, all materials are provided. You don’t have to know how to paint or draw. They will bring the supplies, and you bring your enthusiasm!

For planning purposes, please register below.

Get to know our Artists-in-Residence guests: Paper Midrash:

Husband and wife “dynamic duo” Isaac and Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik create new pathways into Torah, combining deep Jewish scholarship with comic books and pop culture for a unique take on traditional texts. Isaac cuts up comic books and reassembles them into papercuts that explore the stories of the Jewish people. Rabbi Shawna adapts traditional Jewish concepts to a modern Reform context and brings that synergy to students of all ages. Together, they are “Paper Midrash.”

Saturday, February 10th: Program For Our Teens:
Street Art Prophecy at 1:00 PM:
We invite our teens and their friends to participate in two programs with our Artists-in-Residence. Inspired by the words of our prophets and the Tel Aviv graffiti scene, Paper Midrash’s two-hour “Street Art Prophecy” spray paint workshop is a hands-on program designed for teens. Isaac and Rabbi Shawna Brynjegard-Bialik start with a lesson on Jewish prophetic teaching and Tel Aviv street art. Teens will then learn how to use materials to create and spray their own stencils; they make individual prints for themselves and create a “wall” as a group displaying all of their work.

Sunday, February 11th: JSchool – Fingerpainting Mosaic Workshop
Our JSchool students will be lending their hands to create a new set of banners for the THS sukkah using a unique fingerprint mosaic technique!
